I have an old Toshiba Satellite A20 laptop which was so slow at working so I tried to reinstall the windows using the recovery disk provided with the product. But in the middle of the process the recovery procedure abruptly stopped and there came the following message. For realtek RTL8139 (X) /8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet controller v2.13 (021015)PXE-E61 media test failure, check cablePXE- MOF exiting PXE ROMnow I cannot get it to do anything at all.Did I kill my laptop. I can manage to disassemble the laptop and get access to the inner parts if I try.

So Please advise me.I think the reason for the processor to be so slow is the lack of RAM memory for use. It's got only 256MB of RAM for 20GB Hard drive. The processor is an intel pentium 4 Operating system is windows xp home edition.Any advise is greatly appreciated. Remove any PC cards before booting.Boot priority = CD-Rom-LAN-FDD-HDDYou need to change teh boot priority to FDD CD HDD.
Take the LAN completely out, unless you are part of a corporate environment. If you do not have a floppy disk or bootable optical disk inserted when booting then it should try booting the the hard drive. If the computer doesn't boot then post the exact message you do get.Watch the start up screens to see if your hard drive is being configured in the BIOS. It may have died. I am the first owner of the laptop.
I set LAN to be the last option and it worked. I reinstall windows xp using the recovery disk. Now the computer is working fine. Thank you very much for all the help provided. As I mentioned earlier the laptop is too slow when operating any kind of application. It's gone back to sp1 now but once I get it to sp2 it'll start giving me trouble I am sure of it.
256mb is not enough as RAM i get it Do I need 1024mb? Or just 512mb is enough? The hard drive is 30GB.
It will be a problem to find it in store these days that kind of a small memory though. They all have 1GB and 2GB memory i guess.
There is an additional memory slot. I'm not sure upto what limit I can install extra memory. This is quite old machine. Thanks again 'cause the main problem is solved.
